FAQs

Millie Monroe Construction & Chimney

  • How often should I have my chimney inspected?

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends annual chimney inspections for all homeowners. Yearly inspections help detect creosote accumulation, damaged flue liners, water intrusion, animal nests, and other potential hazards before they lead to expensive repairs. Even with minimal fireplace use, regular inspections ensure your chimney stays safe and structurally intact.
  • What is included in your 18-point chimney & fireplace safety inspection?

Our thorough 18-point chimney & fireplace safety inspection evaluates the condition, safety, and functionality of your entire fireplace and chimney system. Along with examining visible components, we conduct a camera scope inspection of the flue to detect hidden cracks, deterioration, blockages, or other problems not visible during a standard visual assessment. Your inspection covers the firebox, damper, smoke chamber, flue liner (camera scoped), chimney crown, chimney cap, masonry and mortar joints, flashing, chase cover (when applicable), exterior chimney structure, signs of water intrusion, creosote buildup, draft and ventilation, hearth and fireplace surround, and overall safety and system performance. Following the inspection, we'll discuss our findings with you, address any concerns, and provide recommendations for maintenance or repairs to ensure your fireplace operates safely and efficiently.
  • How often should my chimney be cleaned?

We suggest scheduling chimney inspections at least once annually, preferably before the heating season begins. This ensures your chimney is clean and safe for use. Homeowners who use their fireplaces frequently may require additional inspections during the year. Even with infrequent fireplace use, regular cleaning and inspections help identify hidden problems, eliminate creosote accumulation, and enhance airflow. Maintaining a consistent maintenance schedule keeps your home safer and prolongs your chimney's lifespan.
  • If I don't have a wood-burning fireplace, do I still need to have it cleaned and inspected annually?

Yes, annual inspections are recommended for gas fireplaces, direct vent fireplaces, and gas log systems to ensure safe and efficient operation. Venting systems can develop blockages, moisture problems, corrosion, animal nesting, or component deterioration that may not be noticeable during regular use. During your annual inspection, we'll assess the condition of your fireplace, venting system, and critical safety components, and recommend any necessary cleaning or maintenance to maintain optimal system performance.
  • How much does chimney cleaning cost?

If a service price appears too good to be true, it likely is, and hiring unqualified professionals for chimney and fireplace inspection or cleaning presents serious safety risks. Proper chimney cleanings are specialized services that should be performed by qualified professionals with appropriate expertise. While we can't provide an exact figure, chimney cleaning performed by a reputable company typically ranges from $250 to $450. Factors such as the intensity and level of cleaning required, company size, professional experience, and training can influence the final cost within this range. Chimney cleaning costs depend on several factors, including chimney height, accessibility, system type, and creosote buildup levels. We provide transparent, upfront estimates so homeowners understand the cost before any work begins.
  • What is creosote, and why is it dangerous?

Creosote is a highly flammable residue that accumulates inside your chimney when wood is burned. Without regular maintenance, creosote layers build up along the flue walls and can ignite when exposed to high temperatures, potentially causing a dangerous chimney fire. Beyond increasing fire risk, heavy creosote buildup can block airflow and force smoke back into your home. Regular chimney cleaning is the most effective way to eliminate creosote buildup and maintain safe fireplace operation.
  • Do you provide design assistance for home renovations?

Yes, we offer design assistance. Whether you have a specific vision or are just starting to consider options, we'll guide you through the design process. We'll explore layout possibilities, functionality, material choices, finishes, colors, and overall project objectives while providing recommendations based on our expertise. Our aim is to design spaces that are both functional and attractive while reflecting your individual style.
  • What adds the most value to home renovations?

Kitchen and bathroom renovations generally provide the highest return on investment, along with updated flooring, fresh paint, energy-efficient windows and doors, finished basements, outdoor living areas, and enhanced curb appeal. The most valuable renovations are those that improve both your home's functionality and long-term worth. During your consultation, we'll help you identify improvements that match your objectives, budget, and your home's specific needs.
  • What happens if I want to make changes to my home renovation after construction has started?

Occasionally, homeowners request modifications after a renovation project has begun. If you choose to add work, change materials, alter the design, or request extra features, we'll review the requested changes with you before proceeding with any additional work. We'll then create a detailed change order that clearly defines the updated scope of work, cost adjustments, and any effect on the timeline. After you review and approve the change order in writing, we'll integrate the changes into your project. This approach ensures full transparency, prevents confusion, and keeps your renovation organized and progressing smoothly.
  • Do you remodel older homes?

Yes. Older homes frequently require extra planning because of outdated electrical systems, plumbing, framing techniques, or structural issues. We thoroughly assess each home before construction starts and suggest solutions that maintain the home's character while updating it to current safety standards.

  • How far in advance should I schedule my project?

Scheduling varies depending on the season and the type of work being performed. Chimney inspections and cleanings are in high demand during the fall and winter months, while remodeling and outdoor living projects often book several weeks or often time months in advance. We recommend contacting us as early as possible, especially if you're planning work around holidays, entertaining, or seasonal weather.
  • What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept several convenient payment methods for our services. We accept payments in the form of check, Zelle, cash, wire transfers and credit cards (credit cards have a 3.5% convenience fee). • Can you help with future maintenance after my renovation or chimney project?

Absolutely. Many home improvement projects benefit from ongoing maintenance to protect your investment. Whether it's annual chimney inspections, chimney sweeping, waterproofing, fireplace servicing, deck maintenance, or repairs as your home ages, we're here to help keep your home safe, functional, and looking its best for years to come.
  • Why should homeowners choose one company for both chimney work and home renovations?

Many chimney issues affect other parts of the home, including roofing, framing, siding, masonry, and interior finishes. As a licensed construction and chimney contractor, Millie Monroe Construction & Chimney can identify the root cause of a problem and complete both the chimney repairs and any necessary home repairs without coordinating multiple contractors. This saves homeowners time, reduces costs, and helps ensure the work is completed correctly.
